According to Varane, one day in June, 2011, he was living at his Mum's house in Hellemmes, next to Lille, when at half past seven his phone rang. Around that time, and following his promising 23 league games with Lens, there were many calls from various teams and agents interested in his future.

Varane had already heard out Manchester United (given that Ferguson was very interested in him), PSG, Olympique Lyon, Arsenal, and Borussia Dortmund... But this call was special, because it was none other than Zidane at the other end of the line. "It's me, it's no joke, it's really me," Zidane kept saying and it was then that Varane recognised his voice. He was offering him the chance to sign for Real Madrid.

"I didn't realise it was actually him, I didn't know what to say. So I told him very politely I was busy studying for my exams and asked him to call me back a bit later. When I'd put the phone down I thought ‘balls’ and I went to tell my older brother about it. He told me I was mad to have hung up on Zidane." That's how Varane told the story to 'L'Equipe' a few months ago.

Zidane must have called back because Varane is now in his second season at the Bernabéu and, following his performance in the match against Barcelona, has proved himself worthy of the ex-France international’s endorsement.

" 최대한 공손하게, 지금 시험 공부하느라고 바쁘니까 나중에 다시 전화해 달라고 말했습니다. "

" 전화기를 내려놓고 저는 속으로 '이건 도대체 뭐야..' 라고 중얼거린 후에 큰형에게 말햇어요 "

" 큰형은 제가 지단 전화를 끊다니 미쳤냐고 하더라고요 "

바로 몇달 전 바란이 르퀴프에게 말해준 이야기 이다.

바란의 베르나베우에서의 두번째 시즌을 맞아 지단은 다시 한번 전화를 걸게 될 것이다.

이번 엘클라시코에서 바란의 퍼포먼스는 그가 얼마나 가치있는지 증명해 냈고 또 차세대
